How To Make a Magic Ring

A magic ring, sometimes called a magic circle or magic loop, is a technique used to begin crocheting with a fully adjustable and tightly closed center. It is especially popular in amigurumi because it helps prevent the small opening that can appear when starting with a chain loop.

Step 1: Wrap the yarn around your little finger, then guide it up and around your index finger. Next, bring the yarn around your middle finger and stop there. Take the loop formed around your middle finger, bring it down into your palm, and hold it securely between your thumb and middle finger.

Step 2: You are now in the crocheting position and ready to begin the first stitch of the magic ring. Insert the hook into the ring and pull up a loop. Then make one chain stitch to secure the loop in place.

Step 3: With the first loop secured on the ring, insert the hook into the ring once again. Yarn over and pull up a new loop, leaving you with two loops on the hook. Yarn over again and pull the yarn through both loops to complete the stitch.

Congratulations! You have completed your first stitch in the magic ring. At this stage, there should be just one loop remaining on your hook.

To create the second stitch in the ring, insert the hook into the ring once more and pull up a loop. You will again have two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull the yarn through both loops to finish the stitch. You now have two stitches worked into the magic ring.

Work the required number of stitches directly into the ring, crocheting over both the loop and the yarn tail as instructed in your pattern. After all the stitches are completed, pull the yarn tail tightly to close the center opening. It may require a firmer pull than you expect to fully tighten the ring.

Then continue working the next round as usual. Begin by making a stitch into the first stitch to the left of your hook. This stitch becomes the first stitch of the new round, and you can place a stitch marker there to help keep track of it.

The magic ring may seem a bit awkward at first, but with a little practice, it becomes one of the most helpful techniques in crochet. It creates a neater, tighter, and more polished beginning for your projects.
