How To Make a Double Crochet Stitch
The double crochet stitch, commonly abbreviated as dc, is one of the most widely used basic crochet stitches. It is taller than the half double crochet and works up quickly, creating a softer and more open fabric. This makes it ideal for projects such as blankets, scarves, clothing, and decorative crochet designs.
Below is a step-by-step guide for making double crochet stitches.
Step 1: Begin in your working position with the working yarn (shown by the red line in the image on the left) placed in front of the hook. Yarn over first, then insert the hook into the next stitch. At this point, you should have four loops on your hook.

Step 2: With four loops on the hook, yarn over once more and pull the yarn through only the first two loops closest to the tip of the hook. These loops are the ones formed when you inserted the hook into the stitch. After completing this step, you should have three loops remaining on the hook.

Step 3: Yarn over once again and pull the yarn through the next two loops on the hook. After completing this step, you should have two loops remaining on the hook.

Step 4: Yarn over one final time and pull the yarn through the remaining two loops on the hook. You should now have just one loop left on the hook. Congratulations — you have completed your first double crochet stitch!

To better understand how this stitch looks, the example below shows a full row of double crochet stitches, with 2 DC worked into each stitch from the previous row. Notice how much taller and wider this row appears compared to the earlier rows made only with single crochet stitches.

Double crochet is an excellent stitch for creating height, working projects more quickly, and achieving a softer, more flexible fabric compared to single crochet. Once you become familiar with the motion, it turns into one of the easiest and most versatile stitches to use, making it a common feature in many crochet patterns.
