How To Make a Chain

The chain stitch, commonly abbreviated as ch, is often the first technique beginners learn in crochet. It serves as the starting foundation for many crochet patterns and projects.

To make the first loop on your hook, lay the yarn on a flat surface and form a loop. Bring the loop over the strand attached to the yarn ball. Next, insert your fingers through the loop and pull a section of yarn through while holding both yarn ends in place. This will create a larger loop that can be placed onto the crochet hook.

Place the crochet hook through the loop and tighten it gently. Hold the knot with one hand while pulling the yarn connected to the yarn ball with the other. Adjust the loop until it fits snugly on the hook, similar to the normal loops used in crochet stitches.

Hold the crochet hook in one hand and the working yarn in the other. Bring the yarn over the hook from back to front, then draw it through the loop already on the hook. This forms a single chain stitch.

Continue repeating the same steps: yarn over, then pull the yarn through the loop on the hook.

Every repetition creates a new chain stitch. Keep making chains until you reach the number required in your crochet pattern.

Aim to keep your chain stitches consistent and comfortable in tension. Chains that are too tight can make the next row difficult to crochet into, while chains that are too loose may cause the edge to appear uneven. With practice, your stitches will become smoother and more even.

Although the chain stitch is simple, it forms the foundation of countless crochet projects, making it an important skill to practice and master.
